Team Genova Burns Wins 2023 Battle Of The Barristers And Will Chair The 2024 Game

Genova Burns team Captain and firm Associate Thomas S. Garlick, Esq. has lead Team GB to victory in the 2023 Fresh Air Fund Battle of the Barristers!

The Battle of the Barristers, an annual fundraising softball tournament which benefits the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund, was held this year on Wednesday, Aug. 2 at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield.

Nine teams competed in this year’s tournament, where professional umpires called balls, strikes and outs. Participating in the 2023 tournament were: Prudential Financial of Newark; Gibbons P.C., Newark; Carella, Byrne, Cecchi, Brody & Agnello, P.C. Roseland; Fox Rothchild LLP, Morristown; Lowenstein Sandler LLP, Roseland; McCarter & English, LLP, Newark; Cole Schotz, P.C., Hackensack; Genova Burns, Newark, and, Brach Eichler LLC, Roseland.

After a day of softball, Genova Burns defeated Carella, Byrne, Cecchi, Brody & Agnello 13-6 to become tournament champions.

The Fresh Air Fund, which has been serving the Greater Newark community for nearly 140 years, provides summer camp experiences for inner-city children.

Dr. Donna Johnson-Thompson, executive director of the Newark Day Center, which operates the Greater Newark Fresh Air Fund, said, “The Battle of the Barristers game was full of excitement and fun. On behalf of the Fresh Air Fund and the summer campers, I would like to thank the nine participating law firms for their support of the fund.

“A special thank-you goes out to the team at McCarter & English, Ryan Richman, Michael Benak, and Alyse Pashman for their hard work in planning and putting the game together for the last three years. I would also like to congratulate the new winners from the Genova Burns law firm. This firm will chair the 2024 Battle of the Barristers game and I am looking forward to working with them.” Richman, who planned the event with McCarter & English’s Alyse Pashman and Michael Benak, said whoever wins the tournament runs the event the following year. “We’ve won the past three years, next year Genova Burns will run the event.”
