Avi D. Kelin Quoted in ALM Publication about Corporate Political Spending Disclosures
October 3, 2018
Genova Burns Associate Avi D. Kelin was recently quoted in an October 1st Corporate Counsel article entitled “Transparency on Corporate Political Spend Is Trending, but Risks Loom Large”. The article mentions that a growing number of companies have decided to disclose the contributions they make to political causes during the last several years, and they also are increasing the kinds of political contributions they choose to report. The piece adds that such reporting could have consequences for the companies.
Mr. Kelin suggests that companies focus their political spending on lower-profile political and social causes, if they’re concerned about companies like Nike facing demands from shareholders for greater transparency in their political spending. “Corporations have faced a real backlash for their political spending and activities; you’re going to make 50 percent of the country upset no matter what you do,” he said in the article. “Therefore, I certainly understand the appeal for corporations not to put themselves in the spotlight as much.”
